What a busy first week! After arriving in Copenhagen and getting over the jet lag, our first group activity was a canal tour on the Nyhavn canal. The canal is actually right outside our housing, so it is super nice to sit by the water and hang out or eat dinner. During our tour, a local historian informed us about Danish architecture. I found it really interesting that the buildings here cannot be taller than six stories and that the Danes take a lot of pride in creating an atmosphere that does not seem too overwhelming (they do not want it to feel like New York City). Below are some super cool pictures from the canal ride:
The next day, our class had a traditional Danish lunch which is called Smorgasbord. This meal is centered around the concept of an open face sandwich and includes highlights like plaice, pork, pickled herring, and many different sauces. After our lunch we took a walking tour around Copenhagen hitting famous spots like the royal palace, parliament, and a few historical churches. Here are pictures from the walking tour:
The most interesting thing to me so far is that when you eat in a restaurant, you actually have to ask for water and pay for it! I must say, it was very awkward at the first restaurant that I went to because I really did not know that. Also, the amount of bikes is insane! Everyone told me that there were lots, but I never realized what it would look like for biking to be the main source of transportation. I spend most of my day trying to not get hit and trust me, there have been many close calls.
Thats all for now! Please be sure to check out my food page, as I have updated it with lots of pictures of delicious food :)
