What the Hygge?!

The Danes are obsessed with the idea of Hygge (pronounced hue-gah). This is the idea of creating an atmosphere that is comfortable, calm, and cozy. Hygge can be different for everyone; for some it could be reading a book by the canal while for others it could be sitting around a bonfire with friends. In Denmark, it is very interesting how this concept effects everyday life. Many businesses in Copenhagen try to create a hygge space for their customers. They often do this by having lots of plants, candles, comfy chairs, and relaxing music playing. Most of the coffee shops here are very hygge. Here are some pictures from some of my favorite hygge spots! As you can tell, hygge for me has a lot to do with cute plants, food, and beautiful views by the water.

Hygge is definitely going to be something that I try to bring back to America with me. Here are some tips for our to bring hygge into your own life!

1. Candles!

2. Take the time to go outside and really appreciate your surroundings

3. Read a new book or watch a movie

4. Eat that extra danish

5. Spend more time with friends and family
